Among the smallest hamster species, Chinese dwarf hamsters make lively, active pets. Here’s a look at their unique traits:
- Size – Only growing 2-3 inches long, Chinese dwarfs are tiny compared to other hamsters. Their compact size makes them good pets for small spaces.
- Appearance – Agouti brown fur with a dark stripe down their back and white bellies distinguishes Chinese dwarfs. Their tails are very short, less than 1 inch.
- Temperament – Chinese dwarfs tend to be fast-moving and jittery compared to other calm hamster breeds. But they rarely bite and become friendly with handling.
- Social – Unlike many hamsters, Chinese dwarfs thrive in same-sex pairs or groups given enough space. Littermates generally cohabitate well.
- Habitat – These active hamsters need lots of floor space with horizontal tubes and low platforms they can scamper through.
- Exercise – Their high energy requires a large exercise wheel at least 6.5 inches diameter. Monitor for back arching on smaller wheels.
- Diet – Seed mixes are ideal for Chinese dwarfs who selectively forage. Supplement with veggies, fruits, proteins, and Forti-Diet.
- Lifespan – With proper care, Chinese dwarf hamsters live around 2-3 years. Common health issues include diabetes and cardiomyopathy.
