Hydration

Clean water is crucial to a hamster’s health. Here are some tips for providing proper hydration:

  • Water Bottle – A sipper water bottle attaches to the cage for easy access. Check it daily to ensure water is flowing freely.
  • Backup Bowl – As a backup, also provide a small bowl of fresh water in case the bottle malfunctions.
  • Daily Changes – Dump and refresh water bowl and bottle contents each day to keep it clean.
  • Weekly Cleaning – Take apart and sanitize water bottle weekly to prevent dangerous mold and bacteria buildup.
  • Filtered Water – Give purified or filtered water to avoid chlorine and contaminants. Avoid tap water.
  • Room Temperature – Water that is too hot or cold can discourage drinking. Maintain it at comfortable room temperature.
  • Hydrating Foods – Provide a regular diet including hydrating fruits and veggies like cucumber, apple, melon and strawberries.
  • Limit Dry Foods – Avoid too many dry foods like crackers or bread that can cause constipation without enough water.

Monitor water intake and watch for signs of dehydration like lethargy and dry, balding skin. Contact a vet for symptoms. Provide unlimited clean water daily.
