In moderation, certain fruits make suitable treats for hamsters to provide additional nutrients and enrichment. Some fruits to offer include:
- Apples – A classic safe fruit for hamsters. Remove seeds and core first, then chop a thin slice into pieces to feed.
- Blueberries – Loaded with antioxidants. Provide just 1-2 small blueberries at a time, 2-3 times per week.
- Bananas – A small chunk of ripe banana can be offered once or twice a week. Mash before feeding to prevent choking.
- Raspberries – Full of vitamin C and fiber. Feed just 1-2 small whole raspberries 2-3 times weekly.
- Strawberries – Provide a thin strawberry slice or two 1-2 times per week. Remove leaves first as they can cause diarrhea.
- Cantaloupe – A one inch cube of cantaloupe can be fed 1-2 times per week for vitamin A and C. Remove rind.
- Peaches – A thin peach slice can be offered on occasion if pits are completely removed to prevent cyanide poisoning.
Fruits should only account for about 1 tablespoon per day of a hamster’s overall diet. Introduce new fruits slowly and discontinue if loose stools occur.
