Hygiene

Proper hygiene is essential to a hamster’s health. Here are some tips for keeping your hamster clean:

  • Spot Cleaning – Scoop out soiled bedding and droppings daily to keep the habitat clean. Avoid disrupting their whole cage layout with full cleanings.
  • Full Cleanings – Deep clean the entire cage once or twice per month. Wash all accessories with gentle soap and hot water.
  • Replace Bedding – Always replace all soiled substrate during full cleanings. Aspen shavings or paper-based bedding absorbs mess best.
  • Wash Hands – Wash your hands before and after handling hamsters or cleaning their cage to prevent disease transmission.
  • Bathing – Only bathe hamsters if absolutely necessary. Use a shallow, lukewarm bath of gentle animal shampoo to lightly clean their coat.
  • Grooming – Long haired breeds need weekly brushing to prevent matted fur. Check feet for fur overgrowth. Trim nails if they grow too long.
  • Check Fur – Monitor hamsters for any bare patches in their coat as this can signal issues like stress or parasites.
  • Scent Glands – Male hamsters, in particular, need their scent glands cleaned periodically to prevent odor buildup. Have a vet demonstrate proper technique.

Keeping on top of both daily spot cleaning and monthly deep cleaning helps maintain proper hamster hygiene and health.
