Chinchilla Cage Setup

Chinchillas are active, energetic pets that need plenty of space to run and jump. Providing the proper housing is essential for your chinchilla’s health and happiness. When setting up a chinchilla cage, there are several important factors to consider.

  • Space – Chinchillas are active and require lots of room to move around. The minimum recommended cage size is 24″ x 24″ x 18″, but larger is always better. The more space your chinchilla has, the happier it will be.
  • Platforms and Ramps – Chinchillas love to climb, so platforms and ramps should be provided. These allow your pet to fully utilize all levels of its cage. Platforms can be wood or metal and should be sturdy enough to hold your pet. Cover ramps and platforms with fleece for comfort and traction.
  • Bedding – Good bedding materials include aspen wood shavings or kiln-dried pine shavings. Avoid cedar shavings, as the oils can be harmful to chinchillas. The bedding should be at least 3 inches deep to allow for burrowing.
  • Hideouts – Chinchillas need places to hide and get away from things that frighten them. Provide hideouts like wood houses, cardboard boxes, flower pots, or PVC pipe sections. Make sure hideouts are large enough for your pet to fully enter and turn around in.
  • Food and Water – Heavy food and water dishes should be secured so they don’t tip over. Refill them daily. Hay racks can provide constant access to hay.
  • Toys – Provide safe chew toys made of wood, loofah, or pumice. Chinchillas also enjoy things to jump on and climb like branches, ladders, and ledges. Rotate toys to keep things interesting.
  • Dust Bath – Chinchillas require frequent dust baths for skin and fur health. Get a dust house or DIY bath container and fill with chinchilla dust. Give access for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week.

Setting up the proper cage is crucial for your chinchilla’s wellbeing. Provide lots of space, platforms, bedding, and enrichment items. With the right habitat, your chinchilla will thrive in its new home.
