Syrian hamsters are among the most popular and recognizable pet hamster species. Here’s a look at their characteristics:
- Size – Growing up to 7 inches long, Syrians are one of the larger hamster species. Some selective breeding has created “giant” Syrians up to 10 inches long.
- Solitary – Unlike some dwarf hamsters, Syrian hamsters are loners and must be housed alone. They will fight with other hamsters.
- Life Span – With proper care and diet, Syrian hamsters live 2-3 years on average.
- Nocturnal – Syrians are strictly nocturnal and sleep heavily during the daytime hours.
- Hoarders – Syrians stuff their large cheek pouches full of food to hoard. They often stash piles of food in their nesting area.
- Colors – Wild Syrians have golden brown fur with white bellies. Selective breeding has created long-haired, short-haired, and colored variations like black, grey, and cream.
- Habitat – These active hamsters need space to run and burrow. Provide an enclosure at least 24″ x 12″ x 12″ large with 6”+ bedding depth.
- Exercise – Syrians run enthusiastically on exercise wheels. Ensure wheels have solid tracks at least 8” diameter to prevent back arching.
