Dwarf Hamsters

Several small hamster species fall under the category of “dwarf hamsters.” Here’s a look at their shared traits:

  • Size – Ranging from 2-4 inches in length, dwarf hamsters are much smaller than Syrian hamsters. Popular dwarf species include Roborovski, Chinese, and winter white hamsters.
  • Lifespan – Dwarfs generally live 2-3 years when healthy, a bit longer than Syrian hamsters. With excellent care some may reach 4 years.
  • Nocturnal – Like all hamsters, dwarfs are nocturnal and most active at night. Allow them quiet days for uninterrupted sleep.
  • Habitat – Dwarfs are active and need more floor space than vertical height. Provide at least 450 square inches of surface area.
  • Social – Some dwarf species like Roborovskis thrive in same-sex pairs or groups when properly introduced. Most dwarfs are also comfortable housed alone.
  • Exercise – An appropriately sized upright or horizontal running wheel is essential to help active dwarfs burn energy.
  • Diet – Quality dwarf hamster food, supplemented with hay, veggies, fruits and protein sources helps provide balanced nutrition.
  • Tunnelers – Dwarfs love burrowing through at least 6” of paper-based, non-toxic bedding. Scatter food to mimic foraging.
