Flowers/Plants/Trees

In addition to their main diet, hamsters can enjoy nibbling on certain plant parts in moderation. Some safe options include:

Flowers:

  • Dandelions – Both the flowers and leaves are edible. High in vitamins A, C, K, and calcium.
  • Marigolds – The flower petals contain lutein and antioxidants. The leaves can also be fed.
  • Roses – Both the petals and rosehips provide vitamin C. Chop rosehips to prevent choking.
  • Nasturtiums – All parts are edible, but only feed a few small leaves/petals at a time.
  • Pansies – Both the flower and plant are non-toxic. Feed a couple petals as a treat.

Plants:

  • Wheatgrass – Nutritious fresh shoots can be offered. Also contains vitamin E.
  • Basil – Provides vitamins K and A. Feed a small leaf occasionally.

Trees:

  • Apple tree branches and leaves – Contain vitamins A and C. Feed a small branch or leaf at a time.
  • Pear tree branches and leaves – Low in sugar, small pieces of bark or leaves are safe treats.

Always wash plant parts before feeding. Introduce any new plants slowly and discontinue if they cause diarrhea or GI upset. Fruits, veggies and commercial food should still make up the bulk of a hamster’s diet. Plants provide extra enrichment.
