Chinchilla Nail/Eye/Coat Health

Chinchillas require proper care to maintain healthy nails, eyes and coats. Their soft fur and inquisitive nature make them wonderful pets, but they are also delicate animals that need attentive owners. With appropriate husbandry, these cute rodents can live 10-20 years.

  • Nails – Chinchillas have sharp, curved nails that continuously grow. Check them weekly for overgrowth, cracks or inflammation. Trim excess length gently with pet nail clippers to avoid injury. Provide suitable surfaces like wood ledges for filing down nails naturally.
  • Eyes – Clean chinchilla eyes when dirty by gently wiping crust or discharge away with a soft, damp cloth. Seek vet care for swelling, redness, excessive discharge or squinting which could indicate conjunctivitis or other issues.
  • Coat – Chinchillas have the thickest fur of any rodent with up to 60 hairs per follicle. Maintain their beautiful coats by providing dust baths 2-3 times per week to absorb oil and dirt. Brush molted fur lightly with a soft brush.

With attentive care to nails, eyes and coats, your chinchilla will remain healthy and active for years to come. Proper husbandry allows them to fully enjoy their inquisitive and energetic natures.
